Nursing as my Career Goal
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
Throughout my years of high school, I have always loved being a leader and
helping others to accomplish tasks. My great academic interest is nursing
and the human body. I think that it is absolutely amazing how something as
simple as a single cell, could produce such a vast and complicate organism.
I love to help people in any way that I can and I feel that through nursing
I will be able to help numerous people. Your parents are not only the people
that raise you, but also the community that you live in greatly helps in
your upbringing. My community has provided so many opportunities for me to
succeed, that I always feel the need to give back.
I am involved in a group called Women on the Way (WOW), where each week we
either have speakers come in to inform us about how successful women are in
the work force or we try to think of ways to help others in need. Women have
come very far in the world and now that we are old enough to pave our own
paths, we should make the greatest impact that we can. Many people can be
very sexist toward women and think that they can not do the same things as
men can. Women on the Way, teaches us to break down that stereotype and show
people how women really are the fighting force of the world. Women on the
Way, has really helped me to become more knowledgeable about myself and
others. It has helped me to gain great independence and confidence that has
prepared me to go out on my own and create my own success.
I really enjoy doing community outreach programs that allow me to help
others who are less fortunate than I. In high school, I have tried to get
active in my community, by being involved in many groups. I am a part of the
Youth Action Council and we try to get the youth out and participating in
the community. My town is very quiet and there is not much for teens to do,
so the Youth Action Council tries to advertise safe ways for adolescences to
have safe fun. As representatives of the Youth Action Council, we are
currently collecting food for the local food bank and selling homemade
granola in order to help pay the medical bill of local young girl with a
very fatal genetic disease. I am also involved in the environmental club and
we are collecting cans and bottles to help pay for a water pump to be
installed in an African Village. The money that we collect, will go to the
installation of a water pump, that also serves as a teeter-totter, and as
the children play on the toy, the water will be pumped down to the village
well.
Recently, I coordinated the blood drive at my high school and encouraged
many to give blood. We were able to obtain 44 liters of blood to donate to
the Red Cross and through blood transfusions our school will hopefully be
able to save at least 132 lives. By participating in this blood drive, I got
a first had look on how the nurses and aids at the Red Cross do their job.
They pay so much attention to each and every patient; becoming aware of
their every need and want. The process to becoming a nurse, it a very
tedious and hard procedure, but I believe with my drive and determination, I
can succeed. The nurses working for the Red Cross were very inspirational to
me and helped reinforced my passion to one day become a nurse.
The feeling that I get after participating in a community event, spending
time collecting bottles, or helping out with a blood drive, is very
overwhelming and I am very glad that I was able to do my part in helping to
fix at least a few of the problems in the world. The world has so many
people that need help, either medically, physically, or financially and in
college, I hope to do more to help the community and even the world. I would
love to travel to globe with my skills of nursing and my knowledge of
medicine, to help people in need. Having the education that comes with being
in a medical profession will take you very far in life and you can go
anywhere in the world and find someone who needs your help.
